Future Scientists to Exhibit Research at 2010 Beal Bank Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair
53rd annual Fair features top student research from across North Texas
DALLAS, Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- In a tradition going back to 1957, the best science research projects from middle and high school students across the metro area will be on display at the Beal Bank Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday, February 27, at Centennial Hall in Dallas' historic Fair Park. The event is both an exhibition and a competition, with more than 850 students competing for $100,000 in prizes and scholarships and the chance to progress to state and international science fairs.
The Fair is organized by Southern Methodist University in collaboration with public school districts, charter and private schools covering Dallas and most surrounding counties. Over 300 professional scientists and engineers will judge the competition and all projects will be on display immediately afterward.
"This is the largest science competition of its kind in North Texas and one of the largest regional science fairs in the country. It's a wonderful opportunity for students to engage in science and engineering and to meet experts in their field of study. We have many students who come back, year after year, refining and improving their work, as happens in a real research project. It's a skill that is not easily taught in school; here at the fair, they have a chance to let their ideas take flight," said Simon Dalley, Ph.D., President of the Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair.
The projects, grouped into 17 different science categories, range from questions such as "Which Gender Has A Better Memory?" to the more esoteric "A Bermuda Triangle of Mathematics."
This year, many students are focused on the problem of pollution, an important issue in Texas with its large economy and growing metropolitan areas.
Beal Bank, the Fair's title sponsor, has a longstanding commitment to academic excellence in science and mathematics. Molly Curl, Senior Vice President at Beal Service Corporation, noted, "We are pleased and proud to continue our close association with the Fair and to continue helping these young scientists further develop their own ideas and abilities."
