Funds2Orgs's substantial accomplishments in just a few short years have also kept millions of shoes out of landfills and, instead, allowed them a new life helping micro-entrepreneurs in developing countries. Funds2Orgs pays nonprofit groups to collect new and gently used shoes. Most of the shoes are collected through local shoe drives but the company also recently launched a crowdfunding site allowing groups to collect shoe donations from around the world, www.shoefunding.com.
Here's how it works: Groups and individuals organize shoe drives, asking supporters to pledge a certain number of pairs of shoes to donate. These shoes can be dropped off at a local collection center or a mailing label can be printed. Once the shoes are collected, Funds2Orgs pays the fundraiser per pound of shoes collected.
All donated shoes are then redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa start, maintain and grow businesses selling the donated shoes. To date, more than 4,000 micro-businesses have benefited from these shoes.
"From humble beginnings in Central Florida we have grown Funds2Orgs into an international social enterprise," said Funds2Orgs founder and CEO Wayne Elsey. "I am amazed at what we have accomplished and how many lives we have touched in just two years. Next year we hope to double our results."
Elsey is also the author of the soon to be published book, The Rise and Fail of Charities In the 21st Century: How The Nonprofit World Is Changing And What You Can Do To Be Ready. If you work, serve on a board of directors or donate to socially minded organizations, this book is for you. It will tell you about the evolution that is taking place. And, based on years of experience, it explains practical strategies that you can use to stay ahead of the curve. The first lesson being that nonprofits are a business.
