FTC Celebrates Pembroke Pines' Designation as Nation's Best City for Hispanic Entrepreneurs
In partnership with the Puerto Rican Hispanic Chamber of Broward County, FTC recognized the city's mayor and commissioners for creating the right environment for businesses to flourish.
PEMBROKE PINES, Fla., May 5, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- City Mayor Frank Ortis, and all members of the City Commission, were recently recognized at FTC Pembroke Pines for their role fostering the growth of Hispanic businesses in the area.
The Broward County municipality was designated 'Nation's Best City for Hispanic Entrepreneurs' by financial website WalletHub in a 2014 survey that assessed the minority business climate within the 150 largest U.S. cities. The methodology took into consideration the Hispanic purchasing power in each jurisdiction, the share of businesses owned by Latinos, as well as taxes imposed on commercial activity. Ethnic and racial composition of all localities was also taken into account. Pembroke Pines is 41 percent Hispanic.
"Pembroke Pines is the right place from which to serve a large Hispanic population," said FTC Pembroke Pines Director of Admission, Maritza Bedoya, at the April 27 event. ''The city leaders have created the right environment for entrepreneurship to flourish, which fits in perfectly with our mission to foster leadership and instill problem-solving skills in each of our students."
The City of Pembroke Pines is 41 percent Hispanic, according to the 2010 U.S. Census.
The event at FTC was attended by more than 100 people, including many business, government and civic leaders who came together to celebrate the city's milestone. Frank Nieves, President of the Puerto Rican Hispanic Chamber of Broward County and cohost of the event, said that Hispanic businesses across the region are getting more sophisticated.
"The diversity of Latino businesses has exploded," Nieves said. "We are now represented in every industry: service, goods, technology, tourism, medical, and much more. Pembroke Pines has done a great job by making the bureaucratic process simple and by not burdening businesses with unnecessary fees and taxes."
