Frost & Sullivan Applauds the Prysmian Group's Specialised Fibre-to-the-home Product, BendBrightXS

LONDON, May 13, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent analysis of the single mode optical fibres (SMFs) market, Frost & Sullivan recognises the Prysmian Group with the 2015 European Frost & Sullivan Award for New Product Innovation for its product, BendBrightXS. BendBrightXS is an optical fibre intended for the cost-effective delivery of fibre optic technology in all network environments including the most demanding areas. The product owes its high performance to very low macrobending and microbending losses, which enables more compact and durable installations. It also offers additional performance margins for easier handling in fibre management systems as well as splice protection devices.
BendBrightXS greatly minimises cable attenuation, even in densest designs, through extra resilience to the microbending losses. The technology offers in addition low bending loss at partial bends in central offices, which prevents degradation of fibre coatings in systems that handle high power. Its longevity, which is currently as high as that of copper cables, boosts its financial performance.
Typically, copper cables are 20 mm diameter wide with 200 pairs in them. Using Prysmian's innovation, new optical cable designs accommodate more than 1,000 fibres in a cable of the same width. This means that a single Prysmian cable can replace nearly five copper cables, making it cost-effective, with reduced requirement of manpower for installation, and a smaller real-estate footprint.

"By increasing the density of the optical fibres in the cable, it supports two-way communication in the futuristic smart grid model, offering effective way to fibre ubiquity, fibre-rich connections that will back all new generation data-intensive networks."
Prysmian continuously upgrades its solutions to stand out from the competition. For instance, it installs its fibre technology in homes and buildings as well as in basements and outdoor networks, which is often a challenging task for competitors. The company also got a boost from the rise of enterprise networks and data centres. The profusion of data such as voice memos, emails, bank accounts, transactions, and videos necessitate ever more fibre links in ever less space in the transmission network.
BendBright is the first-ever commercialised bend-improved fibre, with a bend improvement of almost 100 times of that of standard technologies. The advanced bending behaviour has been achieved with the implementation of a trench with lowered refractive index in the cladding area. This limits the escape of the optical field from the core. This design retains the high performance of the fibre by not compromising the main transmission parameters and adding on top its macro- and micro-bending platforms to facilitate high resistance to additional losses and eventually, aid its operation even in harsh environments and in every part of the network.
"The bend radii in fibre guidance ports, as well as in wall and corner mountings, can be reduced and properly optimised to achieve supreme performance," noted Basu. "Further, Prysmian's proprietary glass geometry enables a close-fitting geometric specification along the entire length of the fibre, which makes BendBrightXS applicable to automated connectorization practices."
The BendBright suite of products is future-ready, as it can operate effectually with higher bit rates, longer wavelengths, and any kind of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission, in all standardised bands in superior fibre-to-the-home systems.
