NEW YORK, Feb. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Malaysia Kitchen for the World, a campaign launched by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) to promote Malaysian cuisine, restaurants and food products in the New York City metropolitan area, will host a special two-day street food extravaganza: the first-ever Malaysian Winter Market at Bryant Park's Fountain Terrace, February 20 and 21, 2013.
Under large, stunning heated tents near the iconic Bryant Park fountain and skating rink, surrounded by colorful umbrellas and lanterns reminiscent of the street markets of Kuala Lumpur and Penang, restaurants and vendors in the New York City and the Tri-State area will showcase a variety of signature Malaysian dishes and food products that draw upon the cuisine's Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences. Chef demonstrations and special performances by an authentic Malaysian dance troupe will take place on an elevated stage throughout the day.
The Malaysian Winter Market will be open to the public. Food from featured restaurants, including Fatty Crab, Laut, Nyonya, Penang, New Malaysia, Bentara, and 'wichcraft, and Brooklyn-based supper club Auria's Malaysian Kitchen, will be on sale for $4 to $8 each day for lunch from 11:30am – 2:30pm (or until sold out) and dinner from 5:30pm – 9:00pm. Vendors such as Duane Reade will also sample traditional Malaysian food products, from noodle bowls to breads, some of which will be available for sale.
"The Malaysian Winter Market is a great opportunity for New Yorkers to experience a broad range of unique Malaysian dishes and products," said Muhd Shahrulmiza Zakaria, Trade Commissioner of MATRADE. "We're honored to work with some of the best local restaurants, businesses and talented chefs to provide a fun, engaging experience for people to learn more about the rich culture of Malaysia."
In addition, Malaysia Kitchen for the World has partnered with Duane Reade for an exclusive promotion to showcase Malaysian food products in its New York metro area stores. From February 2–23, fifty four Duane Reade stores in New York and New Jersey will offer coupons for $1.00 off AsianMeals® Malaysian noodle bowls—authentic ready-to-make dishes that showcase the spicy, exotic flavors of Southeast Asia. Ten of the stores will also sample the noodle bowls. The coupons will be available at the Malaysian Winter Market as well, and may be redeemed at participating store locations until March 31, 2013.
