Fried Frank Continues Strategic Growth of Intellectual Property Litigation Practice
Scott W. Doyle and Jonathan R. DeFosse Join Fried Frank's Washington, DC Office
NEW YORK, April 9, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP announced today that Scott W. Doyle and Jonathan R. DeFosse have joined the Firm as partners in the Intellectual Property Litigation Practice, resident in the Washington, DC office. Mr. Doyle joins as the new head of the Intellectual Property Litigation Practice.
The addition of Mr. Doyle and Mr. DeFosse follows Fried Frank's recent hires of James D. Wareham as the new chair of the Litigation Department, based in Washington, DC; James E. Anklam as a litigation partner in Washington, DC; and Jeffrey I.D. Lewis as an intellectual property litigation partner in New York.

Mr. Doyle focuses primarily on patent and intellectual property infringement actions in the federal courts and Section 337 actions at the International Trade Commission, where he once worked in the General Counsel's Office. A trained electrical engineer and registered patent attorney, Mr. Doyle has litigated cases involving a wide range of technologies including telecommunications, Internet, digital cameras, computer hardware and software, photolithography machines, chemical compositions, medical devices, semiconductors, bar scanning devices, and biotechnology. In addition, Mr. Doyle has vast experience in alternative dispute resolution, including arbitration and mediation. He has also worked on a range of technology-related transactions.
Before joining Fried Frank, Mr. Doyle and his team recently had a series of notable victories, including:
- Securing summary judgment in a patent case for Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz USA in the District Court of New Jersey, and successfully arguing the appeal of the case before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
- Winning summary judgment in a patent case, where the federal district court found patents directed at online health records management systems invalid as patent ineligible and indefinite.
- Securing summary judgment and dismissal of all claims of patent infringement in a case involving fuel injection technology.
- Securing judgment on the pleadings for Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz USA in the District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, where the court found the patent covering the use of expert systems for determining driver impairment invalid.
Mr. Doyle received an LLM with a focus on intellectual property law, with highest honors, from The George Washington University Law School; an MBA from Georgetown University, earning beta gamma sigma distinction and membership; a JD from George Mason University School of Law; an MSEE from The George Washington University; and a BSEE from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. In addition to being a registered patent attorney, he is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Virginia.
Chambers USA has named Mr. Doyle one of the leading individuals in Intellectual Property, and he is recognized in other legal directories.
Mr. Doyle previously served as chair of Shearman & Sterling's Intellectual Property Litigation Practice and co-managing partner of the firm's Washington, DC office.
Mr. DeFosse litigates high-stakes commercial disputes and has participated in multiple trials. He focuses on intellectual property litigation involving diverse corporate clients in the automotive, electronics, telecommunications and other industries. Mr. DeFosse also has extensive experience advising on a variety of complex commercial litigation and tax litigation issues.
Mr. DeFosse received a JD, with highest honor and Order of the Coif, from The George Washington University Law School in 2002 and a BA from The University of Toledo in 1999. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Virginia.
