Friday's Blood Moon Sheds Light on America Haunts' Hiring Season
Haunt owners gripped by tight job market find creative ways to scare up interest
DALLAS, July 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- As the full moon is expected to turn blood red this Friday for the longest lunar eclipse, America Haunts' owners work late night preparing for the hiring season. The association is comprised of the most successful haunted attractions in America and has started hiring a range of talent from theatrical personalities, teachers, chefs, and makeup artists to technology specialists, ticket handlers, laborers, and concession operators. They expect this low employment rate to necessitate some creative tactics to attract and retain their top talent.
Employers at the 28 haunted attractions that make up America Haunts go to great lengths to hire new talent at their locations, which annually draw over a million visitors.
"America Haunts take pride in the fact our nationwide attractions have a lot of seasonal employees who return each year to do what they love, it is a blood-borne passion like family," said Amber Arnett-Bequeaith, spokesperson of America Haunts. "However, it takes hundreds of people to operate a successful, commercial haunted house so there are lots of job opportunities available to join our national haunt family of cast and crew."
Annually, each haunt boasts 200-400 staff members, including employees working as high and low impact scare castmembers, ticket and concession counter employees, and all those who help behind the scenes. One route haunt owners are taking to attract top talent is by offering special perks, from incentives to comforts on the job.
"With a stronger economy, we expect more guests at the haunts this year," said Mike Jubie of Headless Horsemen, New York. "Each haunt owner is providing their own perks to attract and retain employees: more comfortable work environments, dinner, cash bonuses, end-of-season parties, free tshirts, work anniversary jackets and more." Some haunts even added air conditioning in the tight spaces where the cast roams to improve comfort. It is a hot industry to work in, contact an America Haunts closest to you for employment.
Spending on Halloween in 2017 topped $9.1 billion.
