French Bulldog Reigns Supreme Once Again In NYC

NEW YORK, March 16, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Once again, the French Bulldog took NYC's top spot in the American Kennel Club's (AKC^®) 2020 ranking of the most popular AKC-recognized dog breeds in the U.S.

The French Bulldog was also recognized as the #1 pup in San Diego and Fort Worth.

The Labrador Retriever jumped up to the #2 spot, pushing the Golden Retriever down to #3. German Shepherd Dogs rose up the ranks as well and the Bulldog pawed its way up the charts, landing at number five.

"New York City's love for the Frenchie is only growing stronger," said AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo. "The adaptable, versatile pup makes a great pet for suburban families and city dwellers, alike."

True to the diversity of NYC, there were notable favorites among the city's distinct neighborhoods:

• Astoria: French Bulldog
• Chelsea: French Bulldog
• East Village: French Bulldog
• Financial District: French Bulldog
• Murray Hill: Golden Retriever
• New Dorp: German Shepherd Dog
• Park Slope: Labrador Retriever
• Riverdale: German Shepherd Dog
• Tribeca: Bulldog
• Upper East Side: Labrador Retriever
• Upper West Side: French Bulldog
• Washington Heights: Poodle
• Williamsburg: French Bulldog

The AKC also announced its nationwide rankings today at the AKC Museum of the Dog in NYC. The Labrador Retriever celebrates a milestone! The loveable Lab remains the number one most popular breed in the United States for the 30^th year.

While the Lab holds firmly to the top spot, the French Bulldog has continued to skyrocket in popularity. The Frenchie landed at number two in 2020, knocking the German Shepherd Dog down to third. The German Shepherd Dog had been the second most popular dog breed since 2009.
