FRENCH BULLDOG CONTINUES ITS REIGN AS NYC'S TOP DOG
Nationally, Labrador Retriever Remains America's Most Popular
NEW YORK, March 15, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Once again, the French Bulldog took New York City's top spot in the American Kennel Club's (AKC®) 2021 ranking of the most popular AKC-recognized dog breeds in the U.S.
The French Bulldog was also recognized as the #1 pup in Honolulu, HI and San Diego, CA.
New York City saw some shakeups in its top 5 most popular breeds in 2021. Poodles made a comeback in the city that never sleeps, jumping from 6th to 2nd, while Labrador Retrievers (3rd in 2021 and 5th in 2021) and German Shepherd Dogs (4th in 2020 and 6th in 2021) fell a bit in popularity.
"The French Bulldog has solidified itself as a fixture in New York City, claiming the number 1 spot since 2014," said AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo. "The city also mirrored the national trend, with Poodles seeing a surge in popularity. Both breeds make a wonderful companion for a variety of people."

The AKC also announced its nationwide rankings today at a virtual press conference at the AKC Museum of the Dog in NYC. No one can keep the Lab down! The ever-popular Labrador Retriever is the nation's favorite dog for the 31st consecutive year.
While the loveable Lab remains a constant at the top of the charts, the Poodle has pawed its way back into the top five after 24 years, bumping the perennial favorite Bulldog out for the first time in almost a decade. The Bulldog has been a fixture among the top five most popular breeds since 2012.
