"Through the colleges she has founded and then very successfully led, Sabrina has spent most of her life offering people opportunities to improve their lives and achieve the American dream," said Nancy Aossey, CEO of International Medical Corps. "We celebrate her dedication to the community, her remarkable generosity, and her humanitarian spirit. She leads by example and her generosity inspires so many others to give."
Addressing the audience, Dr. Kay passionately described characteristics that make America great: "Growing up in Korea as a child, I thought America was the mighty power of this entire universe…. Then, I've experienced why and how amazing this country truly is. Opportunity, compassion, love, and education that America freely shares with the rest of the world makes America the leader of ideology and freedom." Dr. Kay then praised International Medical Corps for the impact they deliver in disaster-affected regions: "Because of continuous education, International Medical Corps…is ready to transform communities from disease to health, from disaster to hope, and from temporary to sustainable…. And you are the best ambassadors of this mighty country."
Dr. Kay understands the difference education can make in communities and individuals' lives. As Chancellor of Fremont College, she implemented Professional Action Learning®, a unique learning model based on collaboration and inquiry. The introduction of this methodology helped Fremont College increase its placement rate to above 90% for 2009 graduates. Dr. Kay is also Chairman of After-School All Stars, Los Angeles, an organization that provides after-school programs to over 11,000 students in 25 southern California schools. The Humanitarian Award is the second philanthropic honor for Dr. Kay in 2010; she received the Education Award in February from California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for her work with After-School All Stars.
Other honorees included financial partner Oaktree Capital and Dr. Shamail Azimi, a physician serving International Medical Corps in Afghanistan.
