WASHINGTON, March 9, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On June 6, 1944, D-Day, the course of World War II changed when the Allies landed along the Normandy coast, beginning the liberation of Europe. Prior to this pivotal day, American forces based out of England had already been fighting the Axis war machine for years. They defended vital shipping lanes of the Atlantic and the North Sea, and the air forces destroyed critical Axis infrastructure during the Combined Bomber Offensive. All of these actions helped pave the way for the eventual Allied victory in Europe, but success came at a cost. Over 405,000 Americans lost their lives across the globe in World War II.
Today, nearly 14,000 of these Americans now rest eternally at Cambridge and Normandy American Cemeteries. To honor their memory, the American Battle Monuments Commission has released smartphone apps for these sites. Both are free to download in the Apple iTunes Store and the Android Google Play Store. These official U.S. government apps serve as your personal tour guide of the cemeteries.
These apps allow you to:
- Plan your visit to include driving directions, operating hours, and parking information
- Learn the stories of the Americans buried there
- Explore the cemetery grounds, and learn about the design and layout
- Take a cemetery tour in as little as one hour, or spend the entire day exploring the site.
- Understand the U.S. military's role in World War II
- See a map of the cemetery, including key points of interest
Download these apps for free:
- Cambridge American Cemetery via iTunes
- Cambridge American Cemetery via Google Play
- Normandy American Cemetery via iTunes
- Normandy American Cemetery via Google Play
You can use the apps at the cemeteries, or an ocean away. You don't have to be in England or France to learn about these World War II commemorative sites.
In addition to these two new apps, ABMC also has a Pointe du Hoc app free for download in both the Apple iTunes Store and the Android Google Play Store.
