Free Public Program About Clinical Trial Participation
CISCRP Hosts National AWARE for All: Clinical Research Education Day on Saturday, November 6th
BOSTON, Oct. 25 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The nonprofit Center for Information and Study of Clinical Research Participation (CISCRP) is hosting a free public webcast from 12-2 p.m. EDT on Saturday, November 6 to help people learn more about the clinical research process. The webcast is part of National AWARE for All: Clinical Research Education Day.
The webcast is available at a variety of sites including churches, libraries, offices and clinics around the country, thanks to regional sponsors and national sponsor, Genzyme Corporation. In addition, research advocates from organizations such as the Parkinson's Disease Foundation will be showing the webcast and hosting house parties to educate the community about the importance of clinical research.
"There is a need for general education about the clinical research process, including the risks, benefits, and rights of participants," said Diane Simmons, President, CISCRP. "Patients typically learn about the risks and benefits for the first time when they're asked to sign an informed consent document. This is not an ideal time for such education because the person or their loved one may be under great stress due to illness."
The Aware for All program is designed to help people better understand clinical research and its importance. A CISCRP survey found that while 94 percent of the public recognize that participation in clinical research is critical to advancing medical science, the vast majority (74 percent) say they have no real knowledge of the process. Almost none say they know where and how to identify and evaluate whether a clinical research study is right for them.
As part of the webcast Ken Getz, CISCRP's chairman and founder, will describe the clinical research process and will discuss questions that prospective volunteers should ask before agreeing to participate in a trial. In addition, "medical heroes" – individuals who have already participated in clinical trials – will talk about their own experience as research volunteers.
