Free Illinois Fatherhood Empowerment Symposium
CHICAGO, Nov. 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Illinois Council on Responsible Fatherhood hosts its Annual Symposium on Saturday, November 3, 2018 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Oak Park Library, 834 Lake Street, Oak Park, IL.
This free Symposium will focus on critical obstacles facing unwed and divorced fathers. The Council's mission is to increase the number of children in Illinois growing up with a responsible father in their lives.
Governor-appointed Chairman attorney Jeffery M. Leving will host the Symposium, which will include presentations by professionals covering a wide range of fatherhood-related topics. There will be ample time for questions. Featured speakers include:
State Representative La Shawn K. Ford will address a bill that he introduced to the Illinois legislature, H.B. 4113, which creates a presumption in family law cases that equal parenting time for both parents is in the best interests of the child. Chairman Leving, who testified before the Illinois legislature in support of H.B. 4113 said, "This landmark legislation would improve the lives of children throughout Illinois; by giving each parent equal parenting time, this legislation empowers dads to be actively involved in all areas of their children's lives."
Robert Messemer, former FBI Special Agent, will lecture on "Protecting Children from Cyber Threats." Council Member Lois Rakov will present on "Enhancing Fatherhood Involvement: Healthy Start, Watch D.O.G.S., and Other Promising Programs." Wayne Halick, a licensed private investigator, will address "What Parents Should Know About Social Media."
The goals of the Symposium—open to everyone—are to empower fathers and provide survival strategies for participants.
The Council's members are dedicated experts, each immensely committed to supporting single and divorced dads.
Chairman Leving, author of the acclaimed book, How to Be a Good Divorced Dad, has spent his life making significant strides supporting paternal involvement. Leving is a pioneer in fathers' rights and social change, a renowned divorce attorney, and co-author of the Illinois Joint Custody Law.
"The Council provides solutions to father absence by promoting positive paternal involvement and contributing resources to support all fathers," Leving said. "Present and involved fathers improve academic test scores, reduce teenage pregnancy, and encourage children's self-confidence."
