Free Flu Shots Available As Cases Increase Across United States
Chicago's MedSpring Immediate Care offers free vaccines each Tuesday in January
CHICAGO, Jan. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The latest data released by the CDC shows that flu season has hit early and hard across several regions in the United States. Reports indicate that H1N1, dubbed swine flu, has reemerged after causing significant deaths in 2009. Fortunately, this year's flu vaccine protects against H1N1.
To help prevent the spread of influenza, including swine flu, free flu shots will be available at MedSpring Immediate Care's Lakeview, Naperville and Arlington Heights locations from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. each Tuesday during the month of January. Vaccines are offered on a walk-in basis, while supplies last.
The southeast U.S. has seen earlier and heavier than usual flu activity this year, causing a spike in flu patients seen at clinics throughout the region, including MedSpring's 11 Texas-based urgent care locations.
"After analyzing trends in this season's flu activity, we hope that we can help to reduce the risk of H1N1 in the Chicago area by offering free flu shots," said Jon L. Belsher, M.D., MedSpring's Chief Medical Officer.
While it is not unusual for influenza to lead to deaths, particularly in the young and old, the H1N1 strain infects individuals indiscriminately, including healthy adults. The CDC estimated roughly 61 million cases of H1N1 in 2009, including 274,000 hospitalizations and 12,000 deaths.
Although the CDC recommends that people get immunized against the flu as early as September, it is not too late to get an annual flu vaccination.
MedSpring patients enjoy a distinctive and relaxing atmosphere with unique amenities including complimentary snacks and beverages, in-room televisions and activities for children. Following their visit, patients rate MedSpring 4.9 out of 5 stars.
MedSpring Immediate Care has three walk-in clinics in Chicago, as well as six in Austin and five in Houston. Each location is open from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. seven days a week, including weekends and holidays.
