Free Directory Offers Information on More Than 95 Million US Consumer Email Addresses
AddressSearch.com increases the size of its free email directory by 40 percent
JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla., Jan. 31, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- AddressSearch.com, a website helping users to reconnect with acquaintances through email, just finished an expansion of its directory, which pushed the number of freely available email records to more than 95 million. Not only does this make it one of the largest searchable email directories, it also remains the only directory to offer email address information free of charge while maintaining a proactive stance on privacy.
The website, which protects certain sensitive information connected to the email records, serves as a conduit between people who are searching for information and those listed in the directory.
Online privacy has become a major concern among Internet users. Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Amazon, Microsoft, and America Online have all tangled with the FTC in recent years over how they accumulate, keep or track consumer information. "We sought to provide a consumer directory but do so in a way which would limit the privacy concerns of the people listed in it. Other directories sell access to consumer information with little concern as to who is accessing it or why," said Aaron Rosenthal, president of AddressSearch.
AddressSearch.com helps unite people by acting as a relay for email, never fully disclosing the email address to the searcher, thereby keeping the email address private through the communication process.
According to the Pew Internet and American Life project study, 53% of adults have searched for someone online, but, at the same time, 85% were also concerned with maintaining a comfortable level of online privacy. The European Commission is so concerned with this issue they are considering new data protection regulations that will change how Internet and social media companies deal with personal data. The regulations would mean that websites must fully disclose why their data is being collected. American privacy bills have not been passed with the same strict provisions being suggested in Europe. "This is, in part, because some feel this regulation would inhibit innovation," added Rosenthal.
On AddressSearch.com, enough information is given to users to positively identify the person being searched for, but not enough to jeopardize their privacy. In less than 8 months the directory has gone from just more than 68 million email addresses to more than 95 million, with more being added each day.
Realizing some individuals could still be sensitive about having their information in the public eye, the site will remove any information for a concerned party with a simple online request. "We are dedicated to making this the largest publicly available email directory but we will not compromise privacy for growth," said Rosenthal.
