From Tuesday, March 1st through Thursday, March 3rd, the unit will be stationed at the Gateway Center Mall. Immediately afterward, the unit will be moving to Manhattan, and will be stationed on 91st St between 1st and 2nd Avenue on Friday, March 4th.
The Road To Early Detection has been featured on NBC's Today Show, Fox News, CBS 2, PIX 11, NY 1, the Daily News, and was highlighted as One of the Best Freebies in NY by the NY Post. MRI brain scans can cost upwards of $1,000 without a prescription, but the Brain Tumor Foundation provides the reassurance offered by an MRI at no cost to NYC residents.
The launch of the Mobile MRI Unit in November 2008 marked the start of the campaign promoting early detection of brain tumors, focusing on local outreach, with special attention to under-served communities in the five boroughs. Since the launch of Road to Early Detection, thousands of patients throughout the five boroughs have taken advantage of this free, quick, and easy service. As one patient remarked, "It was fantastic! Very simple and easy, and it gave me real peace of mind."
"We have grown accustomed to routinely checking for breast, colon, prostate and other cancers – why not brain tumors?" asks Patrick J. Kelly, M.D., F.A.C.S., Founder and President of The Brain Tumor Foundation. "It is a fact that over half of all brain tumor patients could have their tumors successfully removed if they were detected early, before physical symptoms become apparent. And the only way to detect a tumor early is through the use of MRI brain scans." Although the scans have detected brain tumors, as well as degenerative diseases and abnormalities like Aneurysms, MS, and Alzheimer's.
The Road to Early Detection continues to visit neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs. Appointments and planned locations are available through 877-SCAN-NYC (877-722-6692) or at www.roadtoearlydetection.org.
