WASHINGTON, March 21, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --Today at a Capitol Hill news conference, Jeanne Monahan, director of the Center for Human Dignity at the Family Research Council (FRC), joined Members of Congress and pro-life leaders to condemn new regulations instituted by President Obama's Department of Health and Human Services that requires anyone enrolled in an insurance plan that covers elective abortion to pay an additional abortion surcharge.

At the news conference, Ms. Monahan made the following comments:
"The Obama administration regulation published last week on the state exchanges bypasses the longstanding Hyde Amendment on abortion funding.
"The unfortunate reality has become when the Obama administration disagrees with certain policies – especially when it comes to abortion – they use tricky accounting gimmicks to force their way, even when it bypasses law. But this won't work.
"America is waking up to the sad reality that those of us standing here have long known: Obamacare funds abortion. And in a CNN poll last year, 61 percent of Americans disagreed with public funding of abortion.
"This is a defining moment in America's history. Anyone who is pro-life in this country - and especially the countless pro-life women - must take a stance on this or risk paying from their own bank account for an abortion.
"We must do everything possible to help the Senate pass Rep. Pitts' Protect Life Act (H.R. 358) which would strike the sections in the healthcare law about the abortion surcharge and to pass Rep. Smith's No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act to apply the Hyde Amendment across the government. Or even better as we continue to see more and more regulations roll out with abortion in the small print let us advocate for a full repeal of this law."
