Frazier High School Teacher Named First Runner-up for National Teacher of the Year Award
ARLINGTON, Va., Nov. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Air Force Association (AFA) announced Michael Steeber, a dedicated physics and robotics teacher at Frazier High School in Perryopolis, Pennsylvania, as the first runner-up for the 2014 National Teacher of the Year Award.
An accomplished STEM teacher, Steeber is committed to teaching through creative learning strategies and allowing students to pursue their individual passions. Steeber presents physics as a subject that students can master and use in their daily lives, prioritizing the students' full understanding of challenging subjects. Steeber actively engages with students through coaching sports, hands-on classroom activities and mentoring opportunities.
In addition to his leadership in the classroom, Steeber initiated and developed a Robotics program to include a freshman year introductory course, a college level Robotics course and a competitive club. The Robotics Team allows students to compete with other teams throughout the state and provides various opportunities for students to gain a deeper understanding of the coursework by visit engineering and robotic companies.
As first runner-up, Steeber received a $2,000 cash award. AFA's National Teacher of the Year, Kaci Heins of Northland Preparatory Academy in Flagstaff, Arizona, received a $3,000 cash award and second runner-up, Jeff Scott of Washington High School in Tacoma, Washington, received $1,000.
The National Teacher of the Year award recognizes classroom teachers at the national level for their achievements in building enthusiasm among K-12 students about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and preparing them to use these skills and contribute to tomorrow's technologies.
