Fraport Traffic Figures – January 2015: Passenger Growth Continues
Further Gains in Maximum Takeoff Weights Due to Deployment of Larger Aircraft - Group Airports Also Record Positive Start in the New Year
FRANKFURT, Germany, February 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
FRA/rap - Frankfurt Airport (FRA) has started off the year with continuing passenger growth. In the reporting month of January 2015, Germany's largest aviation hub served more than 4 million passengers - up 1.3 percent year-on-year - due primarily to rising intercontinental traffic. Despite the jump in passenger traffic, aircraft movements at FRA dropped by 2.6 percent to 34,611 takeoffs and landings. In contrast, accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) climbed by 2.6 percent to about 2.2 million metric tons. The trend towards deployment of larger, more efficient aircraft and denser seating capacity per aircraft is continuing. Thus, the average MTOW per aircraft movement grew significantly from 121.4 to 127.9 metric tons year-on-year. Cargo throughput at the beginning of the year is always dependent on the timing of the Chinese New Year festivities. The Chinese New Year occurs in February this year, versus January in 2014. As a result, cargo (airfreight and airmail) dropped slightly by 0.8 percent to 159,740 metric tons.
Group airports, in which Fraport holds an equity stake, also reported a positive start to the New Year. Only Slovenia's Ljubljana Airport (LJU) registered a downturn: with traffic slipping by 2.9 percent to 73,096 passengers in January 2015. In the Peruvian capital, Lima Airport (LIM) welcomed 1,367,608 passengers and reported growth of 8.4 percent year-on-year. Combined, the Fraport Twinstar airports of Varna (VAR) and Burgas (BOJ) on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast received a total of 34,718 passengers in January 2015 - representing a 27.2 percent surge in traffic. On the Turkish Riviera, Antalya Airport (AYT) served 692,138 passengers - a gain of 12.9 percent. At St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport (LED) in Russia, January traffic rose by 4.4 percent to 872,813 passengers. In northern Germany, Hanover Airport (HAJ) achieved a 3.8 jump in passenger traffic. At China's Xi'an Airport (XIY), traffic rose by 7.6 percent ot 2.4 million passengers in January 2015.
Fraport AG - which ranks among the world's leading companies in the global airport business - offers a full range of integrated airport management services and boasts subsidiaries and investments on five continents. In 2013, the Fraport Group generated sales of €2.56 billion, EBITDA of €880.2 million and profit of about €236 million. In 2014, more than 108.5 million passengers used airports around the world in which Fraport has more than a 50 percent stake.
At its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base, Fraport welcomed about 60 million passengers and handled some 2.2 million metric tons of cargo (airfreight and airmail) in 2014. For the current winter timetable, FRA is served by 98 passenger airlines flying to some 250 destinations in 105 countries worldwide. More than half of FRA's destinations are intercontinental (beyond Europe) - underscoring Frankfurt's role as a leading hub in the global air transportation system. In Europe, Frankfurt Airport ranks first in terms of cargo tonnage and is the third-busiest for passenger traffic. With about 55 percent of all passengers using Frankfurt as a connecting hub, FRA also has the highest transfer rate among the major European hubs.
Frankfurt Airport City has become Germany' s largest job complex at a single location, employing more than 78,000 people at some 500 companies and organizations on site. Major new real estate developments - such as The Squaire, the Gateway Gardens business park, and the Mönchhof Logistics Park- are creating an exciting new dimension and range of services at the evolving Frankfurt Airport City of the 21st century.
Almost half of Germany's population lives within a 200-kilometer radius of the FRA intermodal travel hub - the largest airport catchment area in Europe. FRA Airport City also serves as a magnet for other companies located throughout the economically vital Frankfurt/Rhine-Main-Neckar region. Thanks to synergies associated with the region's dynamic industries, networked expertise, and outstanding intermodal transportation infrastructure, FRA's world route network enables Hesse's and Germany's export-oriented businesses to flourish in global growth markets.
Frankfurt Airport meets the increasing needs of the export-oriented economies of the State of Hesse as well as Germany as a whole, for optimal connections to growth markets around the globe. Likewise, FRA is a strategic gateway for companies wanting to access the huge European marketplace. Thus, Frankfurt Airport - which is strategically located in the heart of Europe - is one of the most important hubs in the global logistics chain.
