Frankfurt Airport Records Ongoing Passenger Growth - Deployment of Larger Aircraft Types Continues
FRANKFURT, Germany, February 10, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --
FRA/sc-rap - Frankfurt Airport (FRA) has started off the year with continuing passenger growth. In the reporting month of January 2016, Germany's largest aviation hub served about 4.2 million passengers, representing growth of 2.2 percent year-on-year - an increase of 76,000 passengers compared to the previous January record month from 2012.
Accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) rose by 1.1 percent to more than 2.2 million metric tons. At the same time, aircraft movements decreased in January 2016 by 1.1 percent to 34,244 takeoffs and landings. The trend towards deployment of larger, more efficient aircraft with greater seating capacity per aircraft is continuing. Thus, the average MTOW per aircraft movement advanced significantly to 130.7 metric tons - a new January record at Frankfurt Airport. Furthermore, the average number of passengers per flight rose noticeably by 3.2 percent to 130.3. Accompanied by a higher seat-load factor, this underscores the airlines' successful efforts towards more efficiency. The cargo volume reached a similar level as in 2015, with 159,650 metric tons handled at FRA in January 2016 (down 0.1 percent).
Among Fraport AG's Group airports, Slovenia's Ljubljana Airport (LJU) reported 73,567 passengers, a modest gain of 0.6 percent. With 1.5 million passengers in January 2016, Lima Airport (LIM) in the capital of Peru posted noticeable growth of 10.3 percent. On Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, the Twin Star airports of Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR) significantly increased off-season low traffic by 18.5 percent year-on-year to 41,158 passengers. Serving 689,365 passengers, Antalya Airport (AYT) in Turkey dipped slightly by 0.4 percent. St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport (LED) experienced a 10.0 percent drop to 785,192 passengers. In contrast, Hanover Airport (HAJ) in northern Germany received 295,565 passengers - a gain of 2.0 percent. China's Xi'an Airport (XIY) greeted 2.8 million passengers, reporting strong double-digit growth of 17.1 percent.

At its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base, Fraport welcomed about 60 million passengers and handled more than 2 million metric tons of cargo (airfreight and airmail) in 2015. For the current winter timetable, FRA is served by 88 passenger airlines flying to 247 destinations in 100 countries worldwide. More than half of FRA's destinations are intercontinental (beyond Europe) - underscoring Frankfurt's role as a leading hub in the global air transportation system. In Europe, Frankfurt Airport ranks first in terms of cargo tonnage and is the fourth-busiest for passenger traffic. With about 55 percent of all passengers using Frankfurt as a connecting hub, FRA also has the highest transfer rate among the major European hubs.
Frankfurt Airport City has become Germany's largest job complex at a single location, employing more than 80,000 people at some 500 companies and organizations on site. Major new real estate developments - such as The Squaire, the Gateway Gardens business park, and the Mönchhof Logistics Park - are creating an exciting new dimension and range of services at the evolving Frankfurt Airport City of the 21st century.
Almost half of Germany's population lives within a 200-kilometer radius of the FRA intermodal travel hub - the largest airport catchment area in Europe. FRA Airport City also serves as a magnet for other companies located throughout the economically vital Frankfurt/Rhine-Main-Neckar region. Thanks to synergies associated with the region's dynamic industries, networked expertise, and outstanding intermodal transportation infrastructure, FRA's world route network enables Hesse's and Germany's export-oriented businesses to flourish in global growth markets.
Frankfurt Airport meets the increasing needs of the export-oriented economies of the State of Hesse as well as Germany as a whole, for optimal connections to growth markets around the globe. Likewise, FRA is a strategic gateway for companies wanting to access the huge European marketplace. Thus, Frankfurt Airport - which is strategically located in the heart of Europe - is one of the most important hubs in the global logistics chain.
