Fraport Traffic Figures - January 2014: New Year Off to Flying Start at Frankfurt Airport and Group Airports
FRANKFURT, Germany, February 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Frankfurt Airport (FRA) served more than four million passengers in January 2014, resulting in a 3.4 percent increase compared to last year. Cargo throughput (airfreight and airmail) climbed by 7.2 percent to 160,970 metric tons, benefitting from the high demand in Far Eastern traffic prior to the Chinese New Year celebrations. Aircraft movements increased by 1.2 percent to 35,521 takeoffs and landings. Accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) rose by 2.8 percent to 2.15 million metric tons. Traffic development in January 2014 was influenced by growing demand in the aviation market, in combination with the low base-year effect from the corresponding month last year. In 2013, FRA experienced an over-proportional number of weather-related flight cancellations.
The New Year got off to a flying start with strong passenger figures recorded at the Group's equity-owned airports. In January 2014, Xi'an Airport (XIY) in northwestern China welcomed about 2.2 million passengers - a 20.1 percent jump year-on-year. In South America, Peru's Lima Airport (LIM) registered a 5.6 percent rise in traffic to about 1.3 million passengers. Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg (LED), Russia, had 831,020 passengers in January 2014 - a double-digit gain of 15.3 percent. Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Riviera received 613,274 passengers, representing an 8.5 percent increase year-on-year. With 279,181 passengers in the reporting month, Hanover Airport (HAJ) in Lower Saxony, Germany, grew slightly by 0.2 percent. On the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria, Varna (VAR) and Burgas (BOJ) airports together served a total of 27,288 passengers, down 4.2 percent compared to the same month last year.
