HYDRAULIC FRACKING PROPPANTS DESCRIPTION
Hydraulic fracturing fluids use proppants to inject into the wells, and the most commonly used proppant is silica sand as it is low cost and abundant. The other two types of proppants used are resin-coated sand and man-made ceramics. In the U.S., demand for proppants is primarily from the shale oil industry, as the natural gas price is delinked from the crude oil price and thus it is more economical to develop shale oil. Globally, proppant sales are growing due to increase in the production of shale gas as countries get set to utilize this unconventional energy for domestic purpose and also to export excess gas. Proppant sales worldwide are expected to increase steadily as more and more unconventional oil and gas resources are explored and developed.
According to the National Petroleum Council of the U.S., hydraulic fracturing accounts for over 60% of natural gas development in North America. In the U.S., 45% of domestic natural gas production and 17% of oil production would not be possible without hydraulic fracturing. The economic benefits derived from hydraulic fracturing are large as the technology enables extraction of large amounts of inaccessible hydrocarbons. The demand for hydraulic fracturing proppants like silica sand has increased in North America in the last few years as large number of shale plays have been developed in many parts of the United States and Canada.
The two main proppants (silica sand and ceramics) are studied on the basis of applications and region. Paraffin market share is the largest in terms of value, while building and construction and commercial refrigeration boost market growth for applications. The reason for this is an increase in the demand for energy for cooling of buildings. Also, the application of PCMs (phase change materials) in textiles and shipping and transportation is expected to see a significant growth in the next five years.
