Four Members Appointed to NJCU Board of Trustees
JERSEY CITY, N.J., Dec. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Four new members have been appointed to the New Jersey City University (NJCU) Board of Trustees:
Rafael Perez, Esq., chair of the NJCU Board of Trustees, administered the oath of office to the trustees at the December 8, 2014 meeting of the Board. The newly appointed trustees are:
- Edward P. Fowlkes of Jersey City, a contractor with over 20 years of experience in planning, troubleshooting, and managing residential and commercial construction and renovation projects
- James A. Jacobson of New York City, a retired securities specialist, and former governor and board member of the New York Stock Exchange
- Joseph F. Scott of Jersey City, president and chief executive officer of Liberty Health/Jersey City Medical Center
- Lakeasha Gordon of Jersey City, an NJCU junior majoring in sociology. Ms. Gordon replaces Laquan J. Law of Plainfield, a senior majoring in psychology, as the non-voting student member of the Board. Mr. Law will serve as a voting member of the Board, replacing Alvert Hernandez of Union City, a junior majoring in English.
Edward P. Fowlkes
Mr. Fowlkes has been a principle partner with Alliance Construction Group, LLC. in Jersey City since 2005. Since 1991, he has been the owner operator of Fowlkes and Sons, Inc. in Jersey City. Mr. Fowlkes had served from 2003 to 2007 as a member of Five Bricks Development, LLC. in Jersey City.
Among the notable construction and renovation projects Mr. Fowlkes has managed are the Forrest Senior Apartments, Bostwick Avenue affordable housing renovations, a 47 unit townhome project for the Jersey City Housing Authority at Curries Woods, major construction repair for the General Pencil Co., and loading dock construction for Daylight Transport Co.
Mr. Fowlkes holds a Diploma of Building Construction Management from NYU.
James A. Jacobson
Until retiring from the securities business in 2008, Mr. Jacobson was vice chairman and managing director of Spear, Leeds & Kellogg Specialists, LLC, a leading specialist firm on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), which was owned by Goldman Sachs. He joined the firm in 2001 when Goldman Sachs acquired Benjamin Jacobson & Sons LLC, the premier mid-sized specialist firm, where he was a managing member and co-head of the management committee.
During his four decades with Benjamin Jacobson & Sons LLC, Mr. Jacobson served the NYSE in various capacities, including as a Floor Official, Governor, a Member of the Board of Directors, Vice Chair of the Board, Senior Floor Official, and Executive Floor Official.
Mr. Jacobson has served as a director of the Security Industries Association, director of the Securities Industry Automation Corp., and president of the Specialists Critical Issues Organization. He is an independent trustee on the boards of Allianz Global Multi Fund and Alpine Funds.
His participation in the not-for-profit area includes service on the Board of Directors of The Ronald McDonald House of New York, Inc.; the Board of Trustees of the Taft School in Watertown, CT; and the Surgical Advisory Board of Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
Mr. Jacobson is a graduate of the Taft School and Trinity College, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Joseph F. Scott
Mr. Scott is an experienced hospital administrator with expertise in performance and quality management. He holds board certification in healthcare management as a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).
As president and CEO of LibertyHealth/Jersey City Medical Center since January of 2008, Mr. Scott and his leadership team have successfully concentrated their efforts to address patient safety, clinical quality, patient satisfaction, and ensuring the economic health of the system.
Mr. Scott recently completed a successful three year term as Chairman of the Board of the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce. As Chairman Emeritus, he is working with the new leadership to foster continued growth. He is currently the Chair of Hospital Alliance of New Jersey, Inc.
An avid volunteer, Mr. Scott has taken on several leadership positions with community organizations, including Big Brothers-Big Sisters, The March of Dimes, and The American Heart Association.
In addition to his FACHE certification in healthcare management, Mr. Scott holds a bachelor of science in pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and a Master's in health management from St. Thomas University in Miami.
