Four Bunker Hill Community College Students Win Gilman Scholarships to Study Abroad
BOSTON, May 3, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Four students from Bunker Hill Community College have won federal Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships to study abroad this summer. The scholarship provides funds to students traditionally under-represented in study-abroad programs, including but not limited to those with high financial need and community college students. This year, 500 students from a pool of 2,600 applicants received Gilman Scholarships. Bunker Hill Community College had more winners than any other Massachusetts college.
"I am inspired by the award of this prestigious study-abroad scholarship to our students, who otherwise might not have the opportunity to benefit from global learning and improve their multicultural competence," said Vilma M. Tafawa, Executive Director of the International Center at the College.
The Bunker Hill Community College winners are Timothy Androvett of Chelsea, who will study in Denmark; Lisa Cavanaugh of Braintree, who will study in Argentina; Adelina Keshishian of Malden, who will study in India; and Raymond Lewis of Tewksbury, who will study in the Czech Republic.
Bunker Hill Community College has pioneered international education and cultural awareness through the creation of study-abroad programs tailored to the lives of community college students, whose job and family responsibilities can constrain time to travel. Students in the program have lived and studied in Argentina, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, Senegal and Spain.
Bunker Hill Community College is the largest community college in Massachusetts. The College enrolls more than 12,600 students on two campuses and at four satellite locations. BHCC is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in Massachusetts. Six in ten students are people of color and more than half of BHCC's students are women. The College also enrolls more than 700 international students who come from more than 90 countries and speak 75 different languages.
