Four Ariz. Senators Break Pledge in Tuesday Vote
Vote for sales tax referral violated promise to constituents
WASHINGTON, Feb. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- "Yesterday the Arizona Senate voted to send Gov. Jan Brewer's long-sought sales tax increase to a May 18 special election ballot. It now heads to the House for consideration. In voting for this referral yesterday, the following senators broke a promise they made in writing to their constituents to oppose any and all efforts to raise taxes:
Bob Burns (R-Peoria)
Linda Gray (R-Phoenix)
Barbara Leff (R-Paradise Valley)
Jay Tibshraeny (R-Chandler)
ATR will remind voters throughout the 2010 campaign season who kept their commitment to constituents and who did not. The following six Senators remained true to their Pledges:
Ron Gould (R-Lake Havasu)
Chuck Gray (R-Mesa)
Jack Harper (R-Surprise)
John Huppenthal (R-Chandler)
Russell Pearce (R-Mesa)
Thayer Verschoor (R-Gilbert)
"It's always unfortunate when lawmakers prove that they made a central campaign promise for reasons of political expediency, only later to demonstrate, much like Obama's pledge not to raise taxes on those making less than $250,000 a year, that the commitment was hollow," said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. "ATR applauds the six senators who, despite pressure from legislative leadership and the Governor, upheld their commitment to constituents and opposed yesterday's effort to ram through a massive tax increase in the middle of an economic downturn."
Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) is a non-partisan coalition of taxpayers and taxpayer groups who oppose all tax increases.
