MOORESTOWN, N.J., Oct. 31, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Knowles Teacher Initiative today announced the retirement of co-founder Mr. C. Harry Knowles as Chairman of its Board of Trustees. Mr. Knowles served as Chairman for 19 years; he will continue to render service as a Board Chair Emeritus. Mr. Lawrence Tint succeeds Mr. Knowles.
In 1968, Mr. Knowles founded Metrologic Instruments, Inc. Metrologic became a leader in advanced bar code scanners and a pioneering force in the data capture industry. He registered over 380 of the 600 patents that Metrologic held. While recruiting talent to employ at Metrologic, Mr. Knowles found serious deficiencies in science and mathematics training among young engineering graduates. This experience spurred his commitment to supporting science and mathematics education.
In tribute to the outstanding teachers who helped to shape their lives, Mr. Knowles and Ms. Janet H. Knowles established the Janet H. and C. Harry Knowles Foundation, now known as the Knowles Teacher Initiative, in 1999. Based on the strong belief that America's well-being and economic future hinges on bringing new scientists and mathematicians into the workforce, Knowles exists to increase the quantity of high-quality high school mathematics and science teachers in the United States. Under the leadership of Mr. Knowles, the organization develops and supports nearly 400 teachers in their efforts to improve mathematics and science education for students across the country.
Chairman Tint is a Senior Managing Director of Cantor Fitzgerald LLP, a global financial services firm; President of Cantor Comparative Advantage, a Cantor Fitzgerald subsidiary involved in the development of new stock trading technologies; and Chairman of Quantal International, a Berkeley, California-based provider of leading risk analysis tools and investment management products. In 2008, Mr. Tint was elected to serve as a Knowles Trustee.
"We are eternally grateful for Harry's vision of establishing an organization committed to supporting math and science teachers," stated Mr. Tint. "For nearly 20 years, Harry has steered Knowles in the right direction. I'm honored that I'm being entrusted to continue in his footsteps. In this role, I will strive to enhance his legacy through the work of the organization."
"I have full confidence in Larry's ability to lead the organization," commented Mr. Knowles. "I'm excited to see how Larry leverages his vast financial expertise and leadership skills to empower teacher leaders to improve mathematics and science education in the United States."
