Foster Fuels Wins $850 Million Government Emergency Fuel Contract
Virginia-based family owned business continues to advance their preparedness for nationwide disaster response.
BROOKNEAL, Va., July 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- While Pentagon contracts fell 29% in May compared to May 2013, Foster Fuels, Inc. won an $853.2 million fuel contract from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). 2014 has seen United States defense contract spending drop five of its first six months from its 2013 numbers, but the Brookneal-based firm garnered the third-largest contract awarded in May—ahead of Lockheed and behind only Sikorsky Aircraft and Northrop Grumman.
Part of the overall defense budget reduction is attributed to automatic government cuts, along with troop reductions from the withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan. Thankfully for Foster Fuels, though, there's still a demand for domestic fuel from government agencies like the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Department of Defense (DOD), and the DLA. In fact, Foster Fuel's five-year FEMA contract was the first ever to cover all 48 states in the continental United States.
On Thursday, June 12, Foster Fuels performed a live emergency fuel drill for representatives from FEMA and DLA at Fort A. P. Hill, one of the largest military installations on the East Coast. "FEMA, DLA, and DOD officials were very impressed with our performance and preparation for nationwide disaster response," recounted Watt R. Foster, Jr., company president. "Our FEMA representatives commented that it was 'the best drill they had ever been on.'"
Stephen Tibbs, vice president and chief information officer for Foster Fuels wasn't surprised by the feedback. "Foster Fuels continues to advance our preparedness for mission critical customers across the country. Our team remains committed to staying ahead of many challenges that face our customers including critical fuel availability."
Foster Fuels has been a family-run business since 1921, providing residential, commercial, agricultural, transport, and emergency fuel service. More information about Foster Fuels can be found at www.emergencyfuelservice.com.
