"Matt and I have known each for over 12 years since we built Totality, now a significant part of Verizon Business' managed services group," said John Sheputis, CEO of Fortune Data Centers. "As Fortune expands and scales its operations, we need specialized focus on our new projects. Matt will run Fortune's new developments. Given Matt's enviable track record of building new businesses and the length and depth our relationship, I have great confidence that this will accelerate Fortune's growth."
Fortune's Success with Direct Access; Expansion in San Jose
In April 2009, Fortune commenced operations of its San Jose data center facility, with the ambition to be an industry leader in efficiency and innovation. The facility was fully leased within months of commissioning and has operated with 100% uptime since, with industry-leading power usage effectiveness (PUE).
In 2011, Fortune became the first data center in California to competitively procure power for its tenants through the California Public Utilities Commission Direct Access program, achieving nearly a 4 cent/kWh reduction in cost versus the comparable summer utility tariff. In addition to saving money on electricity, in the 4th quarter of 2011, Fortune also became the first merchant data center in California to go 100% carbon-neutral by participating in PG&E's ClimateSmart™ initiative, which funds greenhouse gas capture and reduction efforts.
"The benefits of Direct Access exceeded our expectations in every way. Not only were we able to reduce our tenant's utility costs by almost seven figures, we also found an economical way to use a portion of the savings to reduce our environmental impact. We felt this was justified as we wanted to save more than just money," said Sheputis.
Fortune has recently completed a project to add another 1.4 megawatts (MW) of critical IT load to the existing 7.8 MW, bringing the total capacity of the facility to 9.2 MW, one of the largest and most efficient data centers in Silicon Valley.
