Fort Indiantown Gap, Memorial Lake State Park in Lebanon County to Host International Migratory Bird Day Tours
HARRISBURG, Pa., April 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- To celebrate International Migratory Bird Day, staff from the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs' Wildlife Office at Fort Indiantown Gap and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources at Memorial Lake State Park are teaming up to offer guided nature tours on Saturday, May 8.
Guided tours of grassland habitat at Fort Indiantown Gap will be offered at 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tours will take roughly three hours. Participants must arrive 10 minutes early for an orientation and must be accompanied by staff because the grassland habitat is located in restricted areas.
Hour-long, guided tours of Memorial Lake State Park will be offered at 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. The lake is a rest stop for migrating waterfowl and home to birds such as herons, red-tailed hawks and bluebirds.
All tours will meet at the park's Middle Road parking lot (GPS coordinates in decimal degrees: North 40.423, West 76.596) located off of Boundary Road.
Appropriate clothing and footwear for walking in or near tall grass is recommended and attendees are encouraged to bring their own binoculars and field guides. No reservations are required and no rain dates will be scheduled.
Participants are also encouraged to hike the woodland trail along the northern shoreline of Memorial Lake, or visit Shuey Pond, Marquette Lake, and Second Mountain Hawkwatch at Fort Indiantown Gap.
