SEATTLE, Aug. 9, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Axon (Nasdaq: AAXN), the global leader in public safety technology today announced the addition of Mojtaba Solgi as its new Senior Research Scientist and Team Lead.
Solgi comes to Axon most recently from Uber, where he was a Senior Tech Lead for the Sensing, Inference and Perception group. While there, he leveraged his machine learning expertise to create real-time computer vision solutions and distributed software systems for Uber's ongoing efforts to improve its maps data and advance its self-driving car technologies. Before taking his position at Uber's Advanced Technology Center, Solgi spent time researching geospatial machine learning as a scientist at Microsoft, prior to which he worked as a researcher at the Toyota Research Institute while earning his Ph.D. in machine learning from Michigan State University.
As a member of Axon's Research team, Solgi will lead a new group spanning Seattle and New York City that focuses on bringing edge capabilities to Axon's body-worn and in-car camera systems—an extremely challenging machine learning problem that involves balancing new model development with the compute and power bounds of the devices. Edge processing helps ensure that Axon cameras are on at critical times in an officer's day, and enables the devices to act as partners for officers in report generation.
"We are committed to driving greater efficiency in all aspects of public safety and I am confident that Mojtaba can help us achieve that through AI," said Axon CEO and founder Rick Smith. "His history of working on the absolute cutting edge of machine learning makes him an ideal fit for the team that's already hard at work trying to revolutionize police technology. Mojtaba brings an unbelievable wealth of knowledge and experience, plus an innovative spirit, to Axon and we could not be more thrilled to have him on board," concluded Smith.
"I've always been drawn to projects that I felt could eventually make a radical difference in people's lives," said Solgi. "The Axon Research team is a clear example of that. I am tremendously excited to get to work on pushing the bounds of machine learning research to improve the trust between law enforcement and the community," concluded Solgi.
