Former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell Returns to the Bipartisan Policy Center
Mitchell founded BPC with other former Majority Leaders Baker, Daschle and Dole
WASHINGTON, July 6, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) is pleased to welcome back one of its founders former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell. Together with other former Senate Majority Leaders Howard Baker, Tom Daschle and Bob Dole, Mitchell founded BPC in 2007. Senator Mitchell served as U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace from January 2009 to May 2011.
"Senator Mitchell has always been a mentor and dear friend. The political debate needs more selfless leaders like him, and I am thrilled that he will be rejoining the Bipartisan Policy Center," said Senator Daschle. "His unparalleled experience will help the organization continue to bolster the voice of bipartisanship at a time when the country needs it most."
"He and I went through many battles in the Senate as Majority and Minority Leader, but we always had incredible respect for each other and we remain good friends," said Senator Dole. "The Bipartisan Policy Center will benefit greatly from his return."
Prior to joining the Obama administration, Senator Mitchell co-led BPC's Leaders' Project on the State of American Health Care with Senators Baker, Daschle and Dole. As a founder and leader of BPC, Senator Mitchell will continue to provide strategic counsel on BPC's top priorities including health care, economic and national energy policy.
"I fondly remember when Senator Mitchell and I worked together, across party lines, in the Senate," said Senator Baker. "I very much look forward to working with him again in our capacity as founders of the Bipartisan Policy Center."
Senator Mitchell served in the Senate for 14 years beginning in 1980 and as Senate Majority Leader from 1989-1995. During that time, he heralded many bipartisan successes and led the passage of landmark legislation on energy, housing, higher education and the American with Disabilities Act.
"Senator Mitchell has a unique appreciation of the courage and creativity needed to solve seemingly intractable disputes," said BPC president Jason Grumet. "We welcome the opportunity to bring his wisdom and tenacity to bear on BPC's major policy initiatives."
