Former Secretary of Education Kerry Mazzoni to Deliver Keynote Address at Magnolia Science Academy

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Magnolia Science Academy in Reseda (MSA-1) will host a luncheon featuring Former Secretary of Education and Assemblymember, the Honorable Kerry Mazzoni, on Friday, January 21, 2011. The event will begin with a reception at 11:30 am for parents, students, faculty and members of the community, and will provide a forum for a dialogue on the importance of school choice and the impact of the current budget crisis on school reform.

"We must work together, now more than ever, to create education opportunities for young people," said David Yilmaz, Chief Academic Officer of Magnolia Public Schools. The Magnolia Educational and Research Foundation is a non-profit educational organization and it has been operating charter schools in California since 2002. It currently has seven other schools in LAUSD in addition to MSA - 1 in Reseda. They include the Magnolia Science Academy in Bell, which operates as a school of choice under the district's Public School Choice initiative. Magnolia Public Schools provides a supportive and values-driven educational environment and was awarded three charters by the State Board of Education to run schools throughout the state, as well as a county-wide charter in Santa Clara county, and a charter in San Diego.

The schools have a curriculum focusing on math, science and technology and actively recruit low income students from ethnically diverse backgrounds.
