Former Rep. Brad Miller Joins Grais & Ellsworth LLP as Of Counsel
NEW YORK, June 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Grais & Ellsworth LLP is pleased to announce that former U.S. Rep. R. Bradley Miller, who left Congress in January, has joined the firm as Of Counsel.
Miller served for a decade in the U.S. House of Representatives and eight years in the North Carolina legislature. He practiced law in North Carolina for 20 years before he was elected to Congress in 2002.
As a member of the House Financial Services Committee, Miller was a leading advocate for financial reform, well before the financial crisis of 2008. He introduced legislation that led to prohibitions on predatory mortgage lending and to the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He led efforts to address the foreclosure crisis and worked with mortgage investors to require more effective disclosure by issuers of mortgage-backed securities.
In a 2010 column, Gretchen Morgenson of the New York Times called Miller "either the right man in the right place on Capitol Hill…or a threat to the status quo" for the financial industry.
"Grais & Ellsworth gives me the chance to stay on the side with which my sympathies lie," Representative Miller said. "Middle-class families got hurt coming and going in subprime lending. They refinanced their houses with dishonest, predatory mortgages, and then their pension funds bought dishonest bonds backed by those dishonest, predatory mortgages. Representing mortgage investors now is really an extension of my fights in Congress."
David J. Grais, a founding partner of the firm, said, "Brad Miller is a lion of financial reform. He will bring us many opportunities to advance reform through litigation."
Miller is admitted to the bar in North Carolina and received his law degree from Columbia Law School. He holds a master's degree from the London School of Economics and a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina. He served as law clerk to the Honorable J. Dickson Phillips Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
About Grais & Ellsworth LLP
Grais & Ellsworth LLP is a litigation firm in New York. It was founded in early 2007 by David Grais and Kathryn Ellsworth, until then partners in a national firm. They started the firm to practice a style of complex litigation that is extinct in large firms: streamlined; leanly staffed; as speedy as the court will permit; planned to culminate not in motion practice but in trials; and, whenever possible, rewarded by success in litigation itself, rather than in the sale of billable hours to clients.
The firm is prosecuting many of the largest and most important cases in structured finance litigation. On behalf of large original purchasers of residential mortgage-backed securities, the Federal Home Loan Banks of Seattle and San Francisco, The Charles Schwab Corporation, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation as receiver of failed banks, it is working on actions against 19 securities dealers to rescind the sale and purchase of nearly $30 billion in certificates backed by Alt-A and prime mortgage loans.
