Former President of Colombia Alvaro Uribe to Headline the Bipartisan Policy Center's Discussion on Stabilizing Fragile States Such as Pakistan and Yemen

BPC's National Security Initiative to Release Recommendations on Addressing National Security Challenges Posed by Fragile States

WASHINGTON, May 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- With political unrest spreading across the Middle East and North Africa highlighting the importance of a proactive and preventive U.S. foreign policy, the Bipartisan Policy Center's National Security Initiative (NSI) is calling for a new national security strategy to help fragile states govern themselves effectively and legitimately. To examine this issue, the BPC will hold a panel discussion on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, to discuss NSI's new report, A Stitch in Time: Stabilizing Fragile States, which focuses on two necessary aspects of stabilization assistance: security and governance. Former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe will deliver the keynote address, describing his experience governing Colombia and the policy changes and investments he initiated a decade ago to reverse the country's decline.

The BPC argues that the best U.S. strategy for national security is preventing, rather than reacting to, the urgent security threats caused by failed states.
