Former FPPC Political Enforcement Chief Gary Winuk Joins Kaufman Legal Group
Winuk Adds Muscle in Sacramento to Political-Law Powerhouse
LOS ANGELES, May 17, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Kaufman Legal Group today announced that it has added Gary Winuk to head its Sacramento office. Winuk was Chief of the Enforcement Division at the Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) from 2009-2015. He was also the lead on policy, legislation and media relations during his tenure there.
"Throughout his years working in the Capitol and at the FPPC, Gary has developed key relationships within the political community and a keen understanding of the political process," said Stephen J. Kaufman, founder of Kaufman Legal Group. "Gary will be a tremendous resource to our current clients while developing additional business in Northern California."
Winuk, who was named a 2013 Attorney of the Year by California Lawyer Magazine and who, prior to the FPPC, served as Chief Deputy Director and General Counsel of the Governor's Office of Homeland Security (OHS), said he's excited to join the state's pre-eminent campaign and election law firm. He is also a former Deputy District Attorney and Legislative Aide in the State Capitol.
"As the head of the Sacramento office, I will provide clients with expert advice on ethics compliance and campaign finance laws," said Winuk, who will be based at the firm's Sacramento office at 1201 K Street – a block from the State Capitol building. "Campaign and ethics rules are very important, but can be complicated," said Winuk, "I bring a full understanding of the legal, political and media complexities of these issues."
Kaufman represented clients being prosecuted by the FPPC when he met Winuk. "I found him to be appropriately tough, but I admired his understanding of the law and his judgment in deciding how to resolve cases," said Kaufman. "He understands the political ramifications of every action, which is important in this line of business. His knowledge of the law and the political landscape in Sacramento provides a big benefit to our growing practice."
Winuk holds a B.A. in Political Science from Rutgers University and a J.D., with distinction, from the McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento. He also completed the Executive Crisis Management course at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Additionally, Winuk served on the Elk Grove Planning Commission, including a term as Chair, and is a current member of the Adjunct Faculty at McGeorge School of Law.
