Former Drug Czar and 4-Star Gen. Barry McCaffrey (USA-Ret.) Receives West Point 2010 Distinguished Graduate Award
WASHINGTON and WEST POINT, N.Y., May 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Four-Star General Barry R. McCaffrey (USA-Ret.), who led the Left Hook in the Gulf War, was SouthCom Commander (directing U.S.-Latin America troops), and later served as the White House National Drug Policy Director, yesterday was given the United States Military Academy 2010 Distinguished Graduate Award by the West Point Association of Graduates. The presentation followed the West Point spring Alumni March and occurred at a "Review on the Plain."
According to Colonel Robert L. McClure, President and CEO of the West Point Association of Graduates, "General McCaffrey's record as an exceptional military leader, accomplished public servant, and lifelong contributor to the United States Military Academy and its mission make him a superb choice for the Distinguished Graduate Award." Colonel McClure quoted a West Point faculty member who stated, "The General has been my most inspiring mentor – in my view, a true model of integrity, personal sacrifice, and moral courage."
General McCaffrey graduated from West Point in 1964. He served in the United States Army for 32 years and retired as a four-star General. At retirement he was the most highly decorated serving General, having been awarded three Purple Heart medals for wounds received in his four combat tours - as well as twice awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's second highest award for valor. He also twice was awarded the Silver Star for valor. McCaffrey is now Adjunct Professor of International Affairs at West Point, an NBC military and terrorism analyst, and President of his own consulting firm in Arlington, VA.
General McCaffrey praised Colonel McClure for his military service and dedication to West Point Alumni and said he was "honored" to be among fellow awardees: Lieutenant General Frederic J. Brown, Jr., (USA-Ret.), former Army Chief of Armor and Cavalry; Lieutenant General Daniel W. Christman (USA-Ret.), former Superintendent of the United States Military Academy and current Senior Vice President for International Affairs, U.S. Chamber of Commerce; Honorable Thomas E. White, Jr., former Secretary of the Army; and Ambassador Robert M. Kimmitt, former United States Ambassador to Germany.
