NEW YORK, Sept. 16, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce that Robert F. Cusumano, the former general counsel for the NYSE-listed international insurance enterprise ACE, Ltd., has joined the firm in New York as a partner.
At Crowell & Moring, Cusumano joins our internationally-renowned Insurance/Reinsurance Group and will help clients navigate a full-range of legal and regulatory issues. He will work closely with the insurance, commercial litigation, government investigations, and regulatory practices that are pillars of the firm's New York office.
While at ACE, Cusumano supervised a global staff of approximately 400 people and professionals, including 150 attorneys practicing in more than 30 jurisdictions around the world. As general counsel and a member of the executive management committee, he was responsible for the legal, compliance, litigation, transactional, and government affairs functions for the global enterprise. During his tenure, the company expanded to more than $30 billion in revenue with 15,000 employees in 54 countries.
Among other things, Cusumano is credited with successfully helping company management to effectuate approximately $4 billion in acquisitions and divestitures, secure the re-domestication of ACE from the Cayman Islands to Switzerland, and successfully manage current and legacy assets and liabilities arising out of one of the world's most diverse property-casualty operations. Prior to joining ACE, Cusumano was a partner with Debevoise & Plimpton and before that, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, where he focused on international insurance coverage litigation and complex transactional work for the insurance industry.
"Bob has served as the highest ranking legal officer at one of the world's largest multiline property and casualty insurers. He brings 30 years of diverse experience to our insurance clients, and he also brings unique perspective and creative approaches to problem-solving for all of Crowell & Moring's clients, regardless of their particular industry," said Angela Styles, chair of Crowell & Moring.
"Crowell & Moring has a world-class practice on behalf of insurers and reinsurers. It is one of the few firms positioned to handle the full range of insurance industry challenges, from the reconciliation of legacy liabilities to new issues driven by the increasing internationalization and regulation of the marketplace. I've known many of the lawyers at Crowell for decades, and I am thrilled to be part of this team," Cusumano said.
"Because they take on risk of every kind, insurers are at the financial center of societal and political developments, and the industry acts as a clearinghouse for potential liabilities imposed by courts and regulators everywhere in the world. Our clients need to anticipate these developments while simultaneously learning from history. I'm excited to be part of a diverse team that has had so much first-hand experience resolving the most complex problems that have emerged over the past few decades, from financial accounting investigations, to regulatory innovation or overreach, to the full spectrum of liability-distribution issues emerging from toxic tort, asbestos, environmental contamination, and other issues," Cusumano added.
Cusumano is also the founder and CEO of the Legal Horizons Foundation, a non-profit initiative dedicated to the enhancement of the rule of law around the world, and a member of the American Law Institute. He earned his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and his B.A. from Harvard College.
