INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- For the 2013-2014 academic year, the local chapters of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. collected more than 2.4 million pounds of food for Feeding America, which translates into more than two million meals provided by local food banks.
The top three chapters -- Alpha-Lambda at Oregon State University, Lambda-Alpha at the University of New Orleans, and Alpha-Delta at Missouri University of Science and Technology -- were recognized by Kelli Walker, Feeding America's Director of Corporate Partnerships, at the Fraternity's summer conference.
Before she presented the awards, Walker said: "Tonight it is my pleasure to give our feeding America award to three hardworking chapters that have exceeded expectations and helped those in greatest need. Lambda Chi Alpha's partnership with feeding America helps them reach their goals of providing meals to the 1 in 6 Americans who face hunger."
The Alpha-Lambda chapter at Oregon State raised 182,799 pounds of food by hosting a watermelon bust as their primary philanthropy. During their philanthropy, they raised money for Community Outreach, a charitable organization that is dedicated to helping local financially disadvantaged households get back on their feet. During their watermelon bust, they held an auction, a field day and a final dance performance.
The Lambda-Alpha chapter at New Orleans raised 145,788 pounds of food by hosting a watermelon bash that included a week-long series of watermelon-themed events, culminating with a field day. Participants raised money and food both internally and within the community for donations to the local Feeding America Food Bank.
The Alpha-Delta chapter at Missouri S&T raised 108,629 pounds of food through activities that include a "can-struction" event in which teams collect their non-perishable food items and compete in a can sculpture competition. They also hosted a "Food Drive 4 Your Community" event and assisted in "Rolla's Got Talent" food bank fundraiser.
In 2013, Lambda Chi Alpha and Feeding America formed a national partnership designed to improve the Fraternity's food collection program on nearly 200 college campuses. Per the terms of the partnership, Feeding America provides Lambda Chi Alpha chapters with Volunteer Engagement Guidelines and Food Drive Best Practices. In addition, Feeding America publicizes the events and food totals collected by Lambda Chi Alpha's chapters through its national network of 202 food banks, its blog, and via Feeding America's social media outlets.
