For Busy Moms Considering Cosmetic Surgery, Combining Procedures Can Offer Several Benefits
Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Rhys Branman cites practical reasons why the "Mommy Makeover" is becoming increasingly popular
LITTLE ROCK, Ark., April 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Gone are the days when having two or more cosmetic surgery procedures at once were considered extreme, says Little Rock cosmetic surgeon Dr. Rhys Branman. A growing number of patients are choosing to combine breast enhancement and body contouring procedures into a "mommy makeover" to combat the unwanted effects of pregnancy and childbirth.
Breast augmentations, breast lifts and tummy tucks—all procedures commonly performed as part of a mommy makeover—all saw an increase in the number of procedures performed among women in the U.S. in 2013, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgery's national statistics.
Dr. Branman points out the following reasons why patient interest in mommy makeovers seems to be growing:
- One recovery period means fewer interruptions to a patient's life. For the typical patient, the recovery process following a mommy makeover is not much different than what is required for a single surgery. "This is particularly appealing for active moms, who want to get back to their family and work responsibilities as quickly as possible," says Dr. Branman, "for these patients, a mommy makeover is a far more practical option than having a breast procedure one year and repeating the surgery process with a tummy tuck the next."
- Undergoing two or more procedures at once during a mommy makeover can be cost-effective. Having multiple procedures during a single operation means the patient only has one set of operating room fees and anesthesiologist fees to pay. Many surgeons will also reduce the fee for each individual procedure when a patient chooses to have both at the same time.
- Combining procedures can enhance the overall result. "Many procedures commonly included in a mommy makeover readily complement one another," says Dr. Branman, "allowing a surgeon to create the best possible result when they are performed together." For example, performing a tummy tuck in tandem with a breast lift or augmentation can help a patient can achieve dramatic improvements to her overall proportions.
- A patient can more immediately enjoy the emotional benefits possible with cosmetic surgery. "Addressing all of a patient's desired changes at once can be very satisfying," says Dr. Branman. After a mommy makeover, a patient who was bothered by sagging breasts and excess skin on her abdomen will often feel confident in her appearance for the first time since having children.
While the mommy makeover may be the most commonly cited among procedure combinations, Dr. Branman stresses that pairing cosmetic procedures for other aesthetic improvements, such as facial rejuvenation, can have similar benefits. "Any time we can combine a patient's desired treatments into one surgery, he or she will usually come out spending less and enjoying his or her results more in the long run," says Dr. Branman. He recommends any patient considering a mommy makeover or any other cosmetic surgery consult with an experienced cosmetic surgeon, who can provide helpful guidance about the different procedure options.
