OWINGS MILLS, Md., Oct. 13, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Urologists at Chesapeake Urology are treating men living with the symptoms of enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), with the minimally invasive UroLift System. Sankar Kausik, M.D., Director of Chesapeake Urology's BPH program, was recently designated as a UroLift Center of Excellence, recognizing that Dr. Kausik has achieved a high level of training and experience with the UroLift System and demonstrates a commitment to exemplary care for men suffering from symptoms associated with BPH. This Center of Excellence is the first in the State of Maryland and only one of 22 UroLift Centers of Excellence in the United States.
UroLift is the first permanent implant to treat BPH symptoms in men 50 years of age or older who are deemed appropriate candidates. Cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2013, the UroLift System is designed to relieve symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate, while preserving sexual function, and with fewer side effects experienced by men taking common medications.
BPH Medications – Unwelcome Side Effects, Increasing Costs
More than 500 million aging men worldwide have an enlarged prostate. Medication is often the first line therapy but relief can be inadequate and temporary. Many BPH medications come with unwelcome side effects as well as out of pocket costs for some patients.
According to Dr. Kausik, "Medications often come with a number of unpleasant side effects including sexual dysfunction, dizziness and headaches. To reap the benefits of BPH medications, men must take them for the long-term and many patients who experience the side effects often stop taking the drugs altogether. It's really an issue of quality of life – without treatment, BPH has a negative effect on quality of life, but so do the medications also used to treat the condition in some cases."
About the UroLift System
The UroLift System permanent implants, delivered during a minimally-invasive procedure, act like window curtain tie-backs to hold the lobes of an enlarged prostate open. Patients recover from the procedure quickly, and return to their normal routines with minimal downtime.
The UroLift System provides an alternative to tissue removing surgery for the treatment of an enlarged prostate for appropriate candidates. Performed through the urethra, Chesapeake Urology surgeons use the UroLift System to push aside the obstructive prostate lobes and position small, tailored, permanent implants to hold the prostate lobes in the retracted position. This opens the urethra while leaving the prostate intact.
Data from clinical trials showed that patients receiving UroLift implants reported rapid symptomatic improvement, improved urinary flow rates, and sustained sexual function. Patients also experienced a significant improvement in quality of life. Most common adverse events reported include hematuria, dysuria, micturition urgency, pelvic pain, and urge incontinence. Most symptoms were mild to moderate in severity and resolved within two to four weeks after the procedure.

"UroLift is a revolutionary therapy that has changed the way we treat BPH in men who are appropriate candidates at Chesapeake Urology," added Dr. Kausik. "The UroLift System has an excellent safety profile and provides men suffering from an enlarged prostate a beneficial first-line treatment alternative to drug therapy or more invasive surgery. Importantly, the UroLift System provides fast and meaningful relief from BPH symptoms, improving overall quality of life for our patients."
Dr. Kausik sees patients in Chesapeake Urology's Bel Air and Havre de Grace offices.
