Foley Hoag Opens New York City Office, Expanding Leading Intellectual Property and International Litigation and Arbitration Practices
BOSTON, May 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Foley Hoag LLP today announced the opening of an office in New York City and the hiring of three new partners. The firm now has offices in Boston, Washington D.C., Paris and New York.
The three partners starting Foley Hoag's New York office are: Peter Sullivan, Walter Egbert III and Daniel Schimmel. Under their leadership, the office will initially focus on intellectual property and international law and arbitration, two areas of strength for the firm. The firm expects that its New York office will expand over time into other practice areas where the firm excels.
"Establishing an office in New York City is consistent with our strategic plan to grow in areas in which Foley Hoag provides market-leading services," said Co-Managing Partner Adam Kahn. "New York is one of the world's largest intellectual property markets and a center of international litigation and arbitration. We have well-established practices in those areas, so a New York presence offers opportunities to grow our IP and international disputes practices. In addition, many of our existing clients are based in the New York City metropolitan area and we look forward to providing them even more extensive services."
Peter Sullivan, formerly a partner at Hughes Hubbard and Reed and formerly the co-chair of the firm's intellectual property practice, is an intellectual property litigator who focuses on patents, copyrights, trademarks, product liability, and commercial litigation and arbitration. He has litigated cases involving technologies ranging from gas turbine engines, to military equipment, to computer technology. He also has an active trademark practice. Sullivan is a member of the American Intellectual Property Lawyers Association, the New York Intellectual Property Law Association, and is past chair of the patents committee of the New York City Bar Association.
Walter Egbert will also be joining from Hughes Hubbard and Reed, and his practice will focus on intellectual property and patent law. His experience extends through areas such as litigation, infringement and invalidity opinions, due diligence studies, licensing and patent prosecution. He has represented academic institutions and corporations in a broad range of industries including medical devices, imaging, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and wireless communications. Egbert has handled a wide range of post grant prosecution matters, including 25 reexamination proceedings. He holds a degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering.
Daniel Schimmel focuses his practice on international arbitration, transnational litigation, and internal investigations. Schimmel, formerly a partner at Kelley Drye & Warren LLP and co-Chair of the firm's international arbitration practice, has represented many French and other European companies and individuals, as well as clients from the United States, Canada, Brazil, Israel, and Venezuela in arbitration and litigation proceedings. He currently serves as Chair, party-nominated arbitrator, or counsel in international and domestic arbitration proceedings governed by the rules of AAA/ICDR, CPR, and the ICC. Schimmel co-authored an e-book on litigation and judicial cultures in France, the U.S., and China, published by Lexis Nexis in 2014, which recently received the award for best law book of the year from Cercle Montesquieu, the association of general counsel in France. Schimmel clerked for Judge Jed S. Rakoff (S.D.N.Y.) and for a judge in Paris, France and has degrees in law and business from the United States and France.
"Opening in New York is an exciting step for Foley Hoag and our clients. We are looking forward to staffing our New York office with top legal talent," said Foley Hoag Co-Managing Partner William Kolb. "We are off to a great start with Peter, Walter and Daniel, and we expect to be announcing additional hires in the coming weeks and months."
