OWASSO, Okla., Nov. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- On the heels of its largest year of growth yet, Folds of Honor announces a record $20 million in educational scholarships awarded to approximately 4,000 students in 2018, representing a 19 percent increase from 2017. Texas marked the top state for the number of 2018 scholarships with 398 recipients, followed closely by North Carolina with 388 recipients and then Florida with 278 recipients. Scholarships are valued at $5,000 and are awarded to qualifying spouses and children of fallen or disabled U.S. service members. Since its inception in 2007, Folds of Honor has awarded nearly 20,000 total scholarships in all 50 states.
The organization has also seen a 26 percent increase from 2017 in applications. While the foundation celebrates a record fundraising year, the need for scholarships is still increasing. More than 700 eligible, qualified applicants were not awarded in 2018, which is more than any previous year in the organization's history.
"This year has brought many major milestones to the organization, and I couldn't be more proud of the hard work and dedication that our team puts forward every day to serve our military families," said Folds of Honor Founder Major Dan Rooney. "I started this mission 11 years ago to honor the sacrifice of one fallen veteran and educate his legacy. Today, we have touched countless military families and created a network of support across the country for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Each year, we continue to grow and exceed our expectations, and it's clear that we're not slowing down anytime soon."
Folds of Honor has a growing presence across the country with 6 new chapters in 2018, bringing its chapter partners to 16 in the U.S. Additionally, in support of Folds of Honor, the University of Memphis announced that it will accept Folds of Honor scholarships as full payment for tuition.
"We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for Folds of Honor over the last 10 years, and especially in 2018," said Rooney. "It's obvious that we're serving a great need, and our goal is to never turn down an eligible applicant in the future. We will continue to fundraise and create awareness for this important mission."
