FocusDriven Announces Appointment of New Board Member
GRAPEVINE, Texas, May 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- FocusDriven – Advocates for Cell-Free Driving today announced its appointment of Jacy Good as a board member. Good became an advocate of distracted driving after she was severely injured and her parents were killed in a May 2008 crash caused by a driver using a cell phone.
The crash occurred as the family was returning to their Lancaster County home from Good's college graduation. A tractor-trailer swerved to avoid a minivan that ran a red light and hit the Goods' vehicle. It was reported the 18-year-old driver of the minivan was talking on his cell phone. Good suffered a traumatic brain injury, shattered pelvis and several broken bones. Since the crash, she has supported legislation banning cell phone use behind the wheel.
"We look forward to working with Jacy to continue our mission to not only increase public awareness on the dangers of cell phone use while driving, but also to support legislation banning both hands-free and handheld cell phones," said Jennifer Smith, president and founding board member of FocusDriven. "We are pleased to welcome Jacy to the board. We believe her story will help others realize just how risky talking or texting on a cell phone truly is."
The National Safety Council estimates 1 out of every 4 motor vehicle crashes involves cell phone use at the time of the crash. At least 28 percent of all traffic crashes -- or 1.6 million crashes -- each year involve drivers using hands-free or handheld cell phones.
