MADISON, Wis., May 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- According to an independent report released last week, Focus on Energy, Wisconsin utilities' statewide program for energy efficiency and renewable energy, significantly increased energy savings in 2012, up 17 percent from the previous year. The 2012 study, conducted by The Cadmus Group, Inc., an independent evaluator, analyzed the program's performance and its benefits and costs for the state of Wisconsin.

In addition to being cost-effective, Focus on Energy's programs experienced a significant increase in participation and achieved high degrees of customer satisfaction. The report found that Focus on Energy provided incentives for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects to over 1 million residential and business customers in 2012. This represents a nine-fold increase in participation from the previous year. The report also found that Focus on Energy helped Wisconsin ratepayers save over $620 million when accounting for energy costs and environmental benefits.
Projects implemented with the assistance of Focus on Energy incentives resulted in about 650 million kWh (equivalent to a year of electricity for about 92,000 homes) and 26 million Therms in energy savings. This is the highest level of electric energy savings and the second highest level of natural gas savings achieved in the program's history.
"More Wisconsinites are participating in and benefiting from Focus on Energy's portfolio of programs," said William S. Haas, Program Director. "We specifically designed a variety of programs to provide more opportunities for utility ratepayers to save energy at home and at work."
The Cadmus Group estimated that the 2012 benefits of the energy savings achieved by Focus on Energy programs exceeded costs by a ratio of 2.89 to 1. In measuring Focus on Energy's cost-effectiveness, The Cadmus Group compared the financial benefits from investing in programs to the financial costs associated with running the programs and delivering the energy efficiency and renewable resource measures.
"Our approach in serving Focus on Energy participants has paid off in terms of energy savings, customer participation, customer satisfaction and cost effectiveness," said Haas. "While we always welcome back repeat program participants, we strive to engage new residents and businesses who would like to increase their energy savings. We look forward to the continued success of these programs in the future."
