MILWAUKEE, June 18, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The reopening of commercial buildings in the wake of COVID-19 poses the unintended risk of Legionnaire's disease––and Flow-Tech is poised to be a key component of the long-term solution.
In March of 2020, businesses, schools, hotels, and government facilities began closing their doors in an effort to mitigate the spread of coronavirus. Now, after weeks of minimal water consumption and little to no flow throughout their plumbing, these facilities face the unintentional risk of legionella. The bacteria, found in both potable and non-potable water systems, causes Legionnaire's disease––a severe, often lethal form of pneumonia.
Flow-Tech has proven an ability to mitigate the potential spread of legionella in water systems by focusing on the reduction of biofilm––where the bacteria often harbors. In 2017, a critical care hospital documented legionella counts over 6,000 CFU/mL within its domestic water system. Using the traditional reduction practices of heating the water to 140°F for more than 30 minutes and lengthy system flushes, legionella counts temporarily dropped to 200 CFU/mL only to climb upward soon after. Working with the Utah Department of Health to perform the necessary tests, the hospital implemented Flow-Tech's chemical-free solution. In less than two months, Flow-Tech removed the biofilm and reduced legionella counts below the 10 CFU/mL "detectable" threshold. Flow-Tech reduced legionella counts by more than 98.5% compared to the previous hot water treatment method.
Aware of the current threat commercial buildings face in reopening, the water technology company is also preparing for future exposure. "Our primary objective right now is to address the immediate threats," says Kevin Brauer of Flow-Tech Systems. "Just as important, we are working to implement a long-term, effective solution when it comes to strengthening facilities' line of defense against legionella."
