Florida Virtual Academy Charter Schools Approved in Palm Beach and Broward Counties
WESTON, Fla., Oct. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Palm Beach and Broward counties recently approved applications to open the state's newest online public charter schools known as Florida Virtual Academies (FLVA). The South Florida Virtual Charter School Board of Trustees, the schools' independent, nonprofit governing board, is working closely with the two school districts to finalize the charter contracts. FLVA at Palm Beach County and FLVA at Broward County are expected to open next year.
FLVA at Palm Beach County will offer grades K-9 in its inaugural year and FLVA at Broward County will offer grades K-8. Each school plans to add additional high school grades in subsequent years. The public charter school applications were approved by the Palm Beach County School Board in August 2012 and the School Board of Broward County in September 2012.

Open to families throughout the Palm Beach and Broward counties, FLVA will utilize high quality curriculum, technology, and school services provided by K12 Inc. (NYSE: LRN), America's largest provider of online school programs for grades kindergarten through high school. K12 is a Florida-approved provider of online school programs. K12's courses and academic programs are used in over 2,000 school districts nationwide, including over 40 school districts in Florida.
The FLVA program began offering its program to families across the state in 2003. The school program has a history of strong academic results, earning high grades from the state and high levels of satisfaction from parents and students.
FLVA at Palm Beach County and FLVA at Broward County will offer flexible and personalized learning programs that work for all types of students, from advanced learners to students with special needs. Certified teachers will provide instruction, guidance and support, and will interact regularly students using innovative technology and web-based classrooms. Teachers also organize school field trips, activities, clubs, and events for students and families.
A similar online charter school was approved by Osceola County last year. The Florida Virtual Academy at Osceola County is currently serving students in grades K-9.
FLVA at Palm Beach County and FLVA at Broward County will follow all state accountability standards and requirements. Like students in brick and mortar schools, FLVA students will be required to meet state attendance requirements and participate in state assessments, including the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test® 2.0 (FCAT 2.0).
