FLAG Art Foundation Presents New Exhibition: Cary Kwok's 'Obsession' Curated by Prabal Gurung
November 18, 2010-January 29, 2011
NEW YORK, Nov. 24, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- The FLAG Art Foundation is pleased to present OBSESSION, the first comprehensive exhibition by London based artist Cary Kwok and the debut of Prabal Gurung as a curator. The collaboration of these creative visionaries produces a dynamic selection of works marked by technical precision emanating from obsession in relation to beauty, sex, and celebrity. The exhibition includes never before seen new works as well as a survey from past series. An illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition and feature texts by New Museum curator Benjamin Godsill and Opening Ceremony's co-owners Humberto Leon and Carol Lim.
Cary Kwok is a London based artist, who was born in Hong Kong and moved to London to study fashion at Central Saint Martins College. He uses an everyday ball point pen to render meticulous detail creating a distinctive style. The drawings depict particular subject matters such as period fashions, hairstyles, women's shoes, and homo erotica, with allusions to race, ethnicity, gender and sexual equality. He is represented by Herald St gallery in London and he has exhibited internationally in Miami, New York, Tokyo, Zurich and Geneva. Most recently he was included in Rude Britannia at the Tate Britain in addition to his current solo exhibition at FLAG.
Prabal Gurung is a New York based designer, born in Singapore and raised in Nepal. Gurung launched his first eponymous collection during New York Fashion Week in February 2009 with a presentation at FLAG. For Fall 2010, he staged his first runway show in the Tents at Bryant Park. Gurung incorporates intricacy and flair to achieve a feminine and classic aesthetic. He has received numerous prestigious awards including this year's CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund runner up award and has dressed leading ladies including Michelle Obama.
