BALTIMORE, Dec. 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- RLTV explores education in America today, including what can be done to keep our nation competitive, and arm our youth with the tools they need to succeed in life, in a new, primetime special - Fix America: Education, premiering Thursday, Dec. 13 at 9 PM ET. Hosted by journalist and educator Aaron Brown, the special tackles issues ranging from the effectiveness of standardized testing, to the nine-month school calendar, to the skyrocketing costs of college education, and seeks answers to these and other critical issues.

Fix America: Education panelists include former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, distinguished senior fellow at the Center for American Progress; renowned educator Dr. Dorothy Strickland, the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Professor of Education Emerita and the State of New Jersey Professor of Reading at Rutgers University; Dr. David Andrews, dean of Johns Hopkins University's School of Education; and entrepreneur and philanthropist John Erickson, founder and chairman of RLTV. Host Aaron Brown is currently the Walter Cronkite Professor of Journalism at Arizona State University.
The United States has fallen to "average" in international education rankings released by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Fix America: Education panelists grapple with what can be done to reverse the trend. They also tackle higher education issues, including how to contain costs to keep a college degree within reach for lower- and middle-class students, and whether certain degrees or courses of study are worth students incurring such a huge debt.
The special is part of RLTV's solutions-oriented "Fix America" initiative, which creates content around relevant and pressing issues. Other recent Fix America specials, produced with Frank Sesno, co-founder of George Washington University's Face the Facts USA, have tackled the debt and the deficit, ending senior hunger and the approaching "fiscal cliff."
"Few topics are more important to our country's competitiveness than improving our education system, starting at the earliest level," said RLTV President and CEO Paul FitzPatrick. "And frankly I know of no more relevant and personal concern among RLTV's core audience, Generation 50+, than the well being of their children, grandchildren and other young family members."
Fix America: Education re-airs Thursday, Dec. 13 at midnight and throughout the holidays. For further programming information on this and other programming, please visit www.rl.tv.
