Five Tips to Keep Pipes from Freezing in Your Roanoke Home
Ted Puzio of Southern Trust Home Services says these five small steps can prevent big problems for southern Virginia homeowners during cold winter months
ROANOKE, Va., Dec. 18, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Trust Home Services, a leading HVAC, plumbing and electrical company in Roanoke owned by Contractor Magazine's Contractor of the Year winner Ted Puzio, is urging southern Virginia homeowners to take these simple steps to keep their pipes from freezing during the coldest months of winter.
"It's a lot easier to be proactive now than to have to deal with frozen or even burst pipes in the middle of the winter or while traveling for the holidays," Puzio said. "Not only are burst pipes a terrible hassle, they can end up costing thousands of dollars in property damage and loss."
Puzio and the Southern Trust Home Services team recommend the following to prevent freezing pipes.
- Keep the heat on – Turning the thermostat down at night or during absences is fine, as long as it's not below 65 degrees. This should be enough to keep pipes warm and prevent water from freezing.
- Inspect the home's exterior – Tiny air leaks near pipes can lead to big problems if pipes quickly freeze. Seal each leak with caulk or insulation.
- Put outdoor hoses away – Take this step before the temperatures start to drop and make sure to shut off the indoor valve.
- Let a faucet drip – Keep one faucet dripping warm water in the home on nights when the temperature drops below freezing. If possible, use one located on an outside wall.
- Keep cabinet doors open – Let the heat from the rest of the house keep pipes warm. It's also a good idea to keep room doors open so heat flows throughout the entire home.
"Nobody wants to deal with a plumbing emergency, especially during cold, nasty weather or during the holidays," Puzio said. "But if misfortune does strike and you have to deal with burst pipes, turn off the water at the main as quickly as possible, then call a professional."
