Five Safety Precautions to Look For Before a Hair Transplant Surgery
ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Finding the right hair transplant doctor involves much consideration: the costs, experience and expertise or doctor personality. One basic factor that is often overlooked is the safety precautions followed by a doctor and his or her team.
Hair transplantation is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure, but a medical procedure nonetheless. What people often do not realize is that most hair transplant "surgeons" are not surgeons in the traditional sense. Most of these doctors have little surgical training or experience in an operating room, which means less emphasis on safety procedures during the transplantation.
"In many clinics, hair transplantation is treated as a simple skin procedure," Jose Schmidt, Patient Education Director at Tempus Hair Restoration, said. "We see the hair transplant procedure as a surgery and conduct it as such."
In order to prevent infections and ensure a problem-free procedure, Schmidt said patients should ask the doctor about safety precautions or look for these signs in the doctor's office:
- The procedure room should be clean and sanitized, and safety covers should be on all the equipment such as the light handles and surgery chair.
- All surgical instruments should be sterilized and covered prior to the procedure.
- The doctor and team members should wear safety gear throughout the procedure. Safety gear includes: safety cap, eyewear, face mask, body gown, shoe covers and protective gloves.
- Patients should not wear their street clothes during the procedure. Preferably, they should wear disposable clothes provided by the office, which are discarded afterwards. Patients' hair should also to be washed before the procedure.
- Afterward, patients should have a light dressing applied to promote healing and to keep the operated area clean and protected.
These steps are vital to making sure germs do not enter the room and that the patient is protected throughout and after the procedure.
Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to see doctors forgo these safety steps. It is important to ask the doctor about what precautions are taken. Patients should never hesitate to ask questions.
